youthful Vegetarians

What do you do when your teenager decides that meat is no longer a valid option of food? She may now believe that killing and eating animals is just wrong, or maybe it is simply for weight or health issues. Either way she has a right to her notion and if you are already preparation wholesome dishes for your family, you won't have to totally change the way you cook. If not, then a change to a best diet would benefit the whole family and you can still eat meat if you wish to.

Since the decision to change to vegetarianism was her own decision, she does have the responsibility for educating herself and being complex in planning of the menu. There are many books on the subject and of course, the internet is a wealth of information.

Vegetarian Dishes

The main concern about eating a vegetarian diet is getting adequate protein, iron, calcium, Vitamin D and other vitamins and minerals that are usually supplied by meat and dairy products. Some vegetarians will eat dairy products but if not, it is inherent to get all the nutrients you need from plant sources. Teenagers need more of all things since their bodies are on overdrive so it is leading to make sure that they get adequate amounts of the right foods.

Protein: Legumes, which are beans, peas and lentils, should be eaten on a daily basis. There are countless dishes you can make with these ingredients and ones that your whole family can enjoy. Eggs are someone else excellent source of protein if they allowed. Whole grains, nuts and seeds are also good.

Iron: Legumes are rich in iron; particularly chickpeas (garbanzo beans), kidney beans and lentils. Nuts and seeds also comprise iron such as almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds. More sources are whole grains, dark and leafy green vegetables, and dried fruits.

Calcium: Skim milk and low fat yogurt have the highest article of calcium, but other excellent sources comprise the dark greens such as kale, collard, broccoli, and okra.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D is a very leading element that aids in the absorption of calcium in the body. The sun is our main source of vitamin D, but it is also available in fortified milk. This is a very leading vitamin for kids and teenagers as they go straight through increase spurts.

Eating a good range of fruits and vegetables along with whole grains and good fats (nuts, avocado, olive oil) will give you the rest of the range of vitamins and minerals your body needs on a daily basis to stay healthy. Vegetarian teenagers can thrive on this diet provided they have adequate rest and exercise and eat minimal amounts of junk food. For the non-vegetarians of the family, meat can always be added to meals if desired.

Regardless, a wholesome diet is the best one for anybody, so if your teenager decides to convert, you can view it as a obvious change and one that your whole family can benefit from.

Cooking Tasty Bbq Food for Vegetarians

Yes, it's true, vegetarians can enjoy barbecues too! If you are a meat-eater with some vegetarian guests advent round for a barbecue, it is very easy to rustle up some tasty vegetarian food. There are also some more fascinating options for the vegetarian host or the brave carnivore!Option whole one for vegetarians is to cook some shop-bought veggie burgers or sausages. If it's a 'bring your own meat' barbecue this is probably what vegetarians will bring. Now, some citizen hate meat substitutes, but most vegetarians quite like them, and will be quite happy with a veggie sausage, particularly with some good relish and salad in a bun.

However, there are lots of other things you can cook for vegetarians which will be a little more impressive - and more than likely the meat-eaters will like them too. Halloumi cheese is all the time popular, and very easy to cook. This is a firm cheese that doesn't melt when cooked, so you can slice it, or cube it and stick it on skewers, and cook over the barbecue until browned on the outside, and soft on the inside. If cooking on skewers, you could alternate cubes of halloumi with cooked new potatoes.

Vegetarian Dishes

Grilled vegetables are someone else good option, as they literally taste of 'barbecue'. For something slightly unusual, try brushing thick asparagus spears with olive oil and grilling for about 5 minutes, until browned in places. You can also literally grill aubergine or sweet potato slices (1-2 cm) or courgettes (halved lengthways), having coated them in olive oil and seasoning. You can also grill whole aubergines on the barbecue, having pierced them in any places with a fork. When they are soft you can scoop out the inside and spread it on some bread, or use it to make an aubergine dip.

Wrapping vegetables in foil prevents charring, so is beneficial if your vegetables tend to burn on the surface but are raw inside. For an authentic barbecue taste though, it is a good idea to cook for a few minutes without foil at the end, until it looks char-grilled. This is one way of cooking corn on the cob, an vital part of any barbecue for meat-eaters and vegetarians.

Lots of other vegetables, such as mushrooms, peppers and onions, work well on a barbecue, but can be quite fiddly to work with. The first-rate option is to thread vegetable pieces on to skewers to make vegetable kebabs. A quicker way is to use a barbecue 'wok' or grill pan (try Lakeland), which you can place on top of the barbecue and keep all your vegetable pieces together. Then you can literally cook smaller vegetables without them falling through onto the barbecue, while retaining that barbecue flavour. This is also a simple way of keeping vegetarian food separate from meat.

A good accompaniment for all your guests is to brush some slices of baguette or ciabatta with olive oil and seasoning, and grill on each side until golden brown. If you wrap a whole garlic bulb in foil and barbecue until the cloves are soft, you can squeeze the roasted garlic out of the cloves and spread it on the bread. Garlic roasted like this becomes much milder and sweeter.

For the literally ambitious, why not try development your own veggie burgers? Then you can have complete control over the ingredients and will feel very satisfied with your creativity. There are loads of recipes for distinct kinds of veggie burgers, but typically you could use mashed beans or lentils as a base, and add any kind of cheese, chopped onions, nuts, herbs or spices for flavouring, breadcrumbs to help make it a bit more solid, and beaten egg to help bind it. Then naturally grill it! You may have to experiment to get a burger that doesn't fall apart too literally - if you are worried, start by cooking it on foil or a baking sheet, and conclude up with a few minutes directly on the barbecue.

Proteins For Vegetarians - List Of Protein-rich Foods

In a accepted diet protein is obtained from meat, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products such as cheese. These all comprise perfect proteins that comprise all the indispensable amino acids that are needed for the human body. A vegetarian diet must gather protein from other sources.

Protein is found in many vegetable sources. Some of these vegetable proteins are perfect in that they comprise all the indispensable amino acids just like animal protein. Others are incomplete and must be combined together to furnish a perfect protein that the body can use.

Vegetarian Dishes

Most plant foods comprise some protein. A vegetarian who eats a wide range of foods will consume sufficient protein in the course of day.

Nuts and seeds are an under appreciated source of protein. They can be added to a wide range of sweet and savoury vegetarian dishes.

Soya beans are source of perfect protein and for that calculate soya products are an prominent part of a vegetarian diet. Commercially man-made soya based meat substitutes are now widely available in supermarkets. They come in range of forms and are often made into pies, burgers, sausages and other ready ready products that offer the busy vegetarian a convenience food.

Soya milk can be found in most chiller cabinets next to the cows' milk. You will also find soya yogurts and soya cheeses. A more traditional soya goods is tofu which has long been used in Chinese cooking.

Another meat substitute is mycoprotein which is made from a range of fungus. Like soya protein it is sold in assorted forms that can be used in a range of recipes. You will also find it in ready made products often sold under the brand name "Quorn."

Beans, peas and lentils, known collectively as pulse, make up one of the major sources of protein for a vegetarian. They are incomplete proteins and must be combined with other incomplete proteins, such as grains, or perfect proteins, such as eggs or milk, to make a perfect protein food. Regularly this is done in one dish such as beans and rice or beans on toast, but this is not always indispensable as the body can store protein and couple it later.

Vegetarians Delight - Get the Nourishment You Need and the Taste You Deserve

Indeed, I suppose the hardest thing about eating a vegetarian diet is making sure you eat right, and get all the protein and other nourishment your body needs to survive. The uninformed vegetarian can actually do damage to their body, but the informed and knowledgeable vegetarian will have a healthy and energetic, lifestyle, with intellect and power to burn.

One of the trendiest people in Vegetarian Dishes I think is Alicia Silverstone. At first, I was like "yah, right, what's this lady going to tell me that I don't already know about healthy cooking, eating, and vegetarian dishes and recipes," and I think I prejudged her all wrong. You see, she appeared to me to be one of those San Francisco, or Westside LA TV cooking personalities for the stars. But, I had to find out for sure, so I bought her cook book, and whoooah! - I was sold, she knows her stuff, and the recipes totally rock.

Vegetarian Dishes

The name of her book is "The Kind Diet - A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet," by Alicia Silverstone, with a foreword by get this; Neal D. Barnard the famous cooking doctor. The book is published by Rodale, in New York, copyright 2009, and it's just over 400 pages. If you want to buy this book I can indeed recommend it, and you can find it online by searching the ISBN: 978-1-60529-644-9.

Now then, let me tell you about a killer, I mean a super tasty recipe that I made myself. It's on page 173 called; "Watercress, Beet, and Heirloom Tomato Salad" - seriously, to die for, and so easy to make even I couldn't botch this one. Look if you want to eat healthy, and like one of those skinny vegetarians, you should really try it. Once you preheat your oven to about 400-and a quarter degrees, you make you wrap, but you use fine sea salt, of the highest quality, a little pepper, olive oil, and a tad of lemon.

Holly Toledo, I mean this is really good. You aren't going to have a salad any better than this in a five-star over priced French Restaurant in New York City. Seriously, just follow the easy instructions, and toss the salad once you are done. Amazing, you simply have to try it. As a matter of fact, I've made myself hungry just writing this online article to tell you all about it. My mouth is already watering, just thinking about it.

Vegetarians And Cancer Diet

You might have a general idea that eating a vegetarian diet is more healthy for you. But do you really know how much less the incidence is of certain types of cancers among vegetarians?
Vegetarian diets-naturally low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and replete with cancer-protective phytochemicals-help to prevent cancer. Large studies in England and Germany have shown that vegetarians are about 40 percent less likely to develop cancer compared to meat-eaters.
In the U.S., studies of Seventh-Day Adventists, who are largely lacto-ovo vegetarians, have shown significant reductions in cancer risk among those who avoided meat. Similarly, breast cancer rates are dramatically lower in nations, such as China, that follow plant-based diets. Interestingly, Japanese women who follow Western-style, meat-based diets are eight times more likely to develop breast cancer than women who follow a more traditional plant-based diet. Meat and dairy products contribute to many forms of cancer, including cancer of the colon, breast, ovaries, and prostate.
Harvard studies that included tens of thousands of women and men have shown that regular meat consumption increases colon cancer risk by roughly 300 percent. High-fat diets also encourage the body's production of estrogens. Increased levels of this sex hormone have been linked to breast cancer.
A recent report noted that the rate of breast cancer among pre-menopausal women who ate the most animal (but not vegetable) fat was one-third higher than that of women who ate the least animal fat. A separate study from Cambridge University also linked diets high in saturated fat to breast cancer.
One study linked dairy products to an increased risk of ovarian cancer. The process of breaking down the lactose (milk sugar) evidently damages the ovaries. Daily meat consumption triples the risk of prostate enlargement. Regular milk consumption doubles the risk and failure to consume vegetables regularly nearly quadruples the risk.
Vegetarians avoid the animal fat linked to cancer and get abundant fiber, vitamins, and phytochemicals that help to prevent cancer. In addition, blood analysis of vegetarians reveals a higher level of "natural killer cells," specialized white blood cells that attack cancer cells.
Many of the health benefits derived from a vegetarian diet have to do with creating a healthy environment in the bowels and stomach. Our digestive systems, from prehistory on, were designed to metabolize vegetable matter, more than animal products.
Fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts provide the kind of dietary fiber our digestive systems need to function properly. The Western diet that's high in processed and refined flour and sugar, and in animal products that are laden with hormones and antibiotics, are actually anathema to our insides.
When the digestive system doesn't function and work as it's intended to, that leads to opportunistic diseases or changes in the DNA of cells in the stomach and colon. And there are more practical considerations as well. When we don't get enough of the fiber we need, we incur a host of digestion and elimination problems, such as constipation and hemorrhoids that are a result of straining.
These diseases and syndromes are much less evident in a vegetarian population than in a meat-eating population.
Other diseases of the bowel that occur less frequently in a vegetarian population include irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic ulcerative colitis, mostly likely due to the increased fiber content in a vegetarian diet. And of course a diet that's higher in dietary fiber that comes from a vegetarian diet will decrease the likelihood or risk of colon cancer.
When you consider the risks that come with a diet that includes meat and animal products, and the benefits that come from a vegetarian diet, does the prospect of a steak or burger or bacon really sound that good to you? Doesn't it at least make sense to reverse the portion sizes and proportions of meats to vegetables and side dishes? In other words, if you must continue to eat meat, then make meat your side dish, or just incidental to your meal, such as in a stir fry. Increasing the proportion of fruits and vegetables in your diet can only be good for you.
Think about it, have you ever seen a fat vegetarian? Probably not. In fact, for most of us, vegetarian is almost synonymous with lean and healthy, isn't it? And when you start any diet, what's the first thing the experts tell you? Generally it's to increase the amounts of vegetables you're eating and to eat limited amounts of meat, especially high-fat red meat and pork.
And what happens when you resume your old eating habits? Generally the weight will come right back on. Even the greatest will-power can't overcome the unhealthy effects of eating high-fat meat.
When you eat a diet that's higher in dietary fiber, that's primarily if not totally vegetarian, you're naturally healthier. You're feeding your body and getting it the nutrition it needs to run efficiently.
You have more energy and stamina; you wake up more easily and more refreshed. It's easier to exercise, because you're not so weighed down by digesting the high fat and excessive protein that comes from eating a carnivorous diet.
Many diets fail because we think of them as depriving ourselves of food we love. The trick is to change that thinking. There are so many compelling reasons to eliminate meat from our diet, so why not forget about losing weight? Focus instead on eating healthier, or eating in a way that's in balance with the earth, and that doesn't need to subsist on the suffering of animals. You'll probably find you'll start to lose weight without even thinking about it!
And when you do lose weight, so many other health risks can fall by the wayside as well. You'll find your blood pressure falls into a healthier range and your risk for Type II diabetes can decrease. You'll look better and feel better and probably never go back to your old ways of eating!

Vegetarian Cooking Tips - Iron Rich Foods For Vegetarians

Vegetarians may find it a bit more difficult to get the iron they need, but some may not understand the reason why. There are two forms of iron: heme, which comes from animal sources, and non-heme, which comes from plant sources. Non-heme iron is more difficult for the body to absorb than heme iron in general. However, if you eat a food containing vitamin C in the same meal with your plant-sourced iron, it helps your body to absorb that non-heme iron more effectively.

This simple trick can alleviate any worries about developing anemia. Iron helps your blood cells carry oxygen around your body, it helps your immune system fight effectively, and it is necessary to get the energy from the food you eat. If you are low in iron, you may feel tired, due to your body not getting enough oxygen. Over consumption of iron can also be toxic, so finding a good balance is important. Too much iron can make you susceptible to bacterial infections. It is very difficult to get iron toxicity from foods alone; it usually results from too many iron supplements.

Vegetarian Dishes

Adult women need 33 mg of iron per day. Adult men and menopausal women need 14 mg per day. Women in the childbearing years need more iron to compensate for the iron lost through monthly menstruation. Now... what foods are going to give you what you need?

Grain Sources

Bran is a great source of iron. Eat it as cereal, bake it into bread or muffins. Oatmeal is also a good source, but do not rely on instant varieties. Cook the old-fashioned oatmeal, or better yet, get the steel cut oats. They take a little longer to cook, but they have a great flavor and are full of iron and other nutrients. Oatmeal can also be added to muffins, cakes, cookies and other recipes.

Legumes

Beans are full of iron as well as protein. Add navy beans, black-eyed peas, lentils, chickpeas, soybeans, and tofu to your diet to up your iron percentages. Beans can be made into veggie burgers or cooked in stews and soups. Tofu can be a little challenging at first, but there are many recipes to try for this interesting ingredient.

Fruits and Vegetables

The more veggies you eat throughout the day, the more iron you get. Swiss chard, pumpkin, watermelon, raisins, potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli, bok choy and dates all have pretty good levels of iron in them. Leafy greens like leaf lettuces, spinach and beet greens are a good source of iron. If you do not want salads all the time, try adding greens to soups, pasta sauces, and smoothies. Just add some fruit to the smoothies to sweeten them up. Add sweet potatoes and squash to stews and soups; you do not have to eat them just one-way. If you like Japanese cuisine, stock up on the edible seaweeds. It is a great excuse to enjoy vegetarian sushi. Parsley and watercress are also good sources of iron.

Good Eats For Vegans and Vegetarians

Food is usually part of the adventure of going on vacation in exotic locations such as Barbados. From quaint Barbados small hotel restaurants to local eateries in different towns, food can be obtained easily, and enjoyed immensely because of the fact that local cuisine is the best way to get to know a culture. However, this is not necessarily always the case because some people choose to restrict their diets out of principle, belief, health, and so on.

Since a lot of people are becoming more health conscious nowadays, the vegetarian and vegan diets are no longer uncommon. However, traveling with such diets can be challenging if one does not know where to look for the right kind of dishes. Luckily for Barbados vacationers, the island is no stranger to healthy eating lifestyles. Here are some of the best restaurants, eateries and stores that cater to people who live by vegetarian and vegan diets.

Vegetarian Dishes

For those who desire more casual dining or fast stops, these are the places that come highly recommended:

(1) Jenn's Health and Beauty - This is a health food store located on the left hand side opposite RBTT Bank in Bridgetown. The fun fact is that it is a grocery store, book store and café in one. Since it serves food beginning 7:30 AM, it is perfect for visitors looking for a good, healthy breakfast after getting some early exercise. They serve yummy treats like veggie sausages and tofu scramble. From 11 in the morning, Jenn's starts serving various Bajan dishes like stews, soups and so on. Be informed that seating is the main challenge since it is quite popular.

(2) Indian Grill - this restaurant is located just on the tip of Bridgetown and is in Baystreet. Their roti is their best seller and patrons claim that it is one of the few places who get the taste and texture just right. Here, they make 14 different types of roti, both for vegan or vegetarians, and meat eaters.

(3) Bubba's Sports Bar - Strictly speaking, this sports bar in Worthing, Christ Church is not a vegetarian or vegan place. It is a regular place that serves regular food with meat, butter, cheese-you name it. However, it is home to one of the island's best veggie burgers. Made out of fresh vegetables, they serve the patty with fries and a memorable tasty sauce that makes the dining experience truly remarkable.

There would be visitors who prefer self-catering vacations in a Barbados small hotel or apartment hotel and cook their own food. The best places to buy ingredients for vegan or vegetarian dishes are:

(1) Super Centre - This grocery store carries majority of the common ingredients necessary for vegan and vegetarian dishes. It is basically an Americanized establishment and practically has everything you can find overseas except for 'tempeh'. They sell basic brands for these diets as well as fresh organic produce like mangoes.

(2) Pricesmart - a lot of people are familiar with this place and it is a membership only grocery store. Located in St. Michael and is 2 minutes away from Super Centre, the Pricesmart in Barbados features a great roti place and a restaurant that conveniently serve vegan and vegetarian options.

There are a lot more establishments scattered around the island. The best way to find out where these places are is to consult locals or look them up on the internet.

Protein is found in many vegetable sources. Some of these vegetable proteins are complete in that they contain all the essential amino acids just like animal protein. Others are incomplete and must be combined together to produce a complete protein that the body can use.

Vegetarian Dishes

Most plant foods contain some protein. A vegetarian who eats a wide variety of foods will consume sufficient protein in the course of day.

Nuts and seeds are an under appreciated source of protein. They can be added to a wide range of sweet and savoury vegetarian dishes.

Soya beans are source of complete protein and for that reason soya products are an important part of a vegetarian diet. Commercially manufactured soya based meat substitutes are now widely available in supermarkets. They come in variety of forms and are often made into pies, burgers, sausages and other ready prepared products that offer the busy vegetarian a convenience food.

Soya milk can be found in most chiller cabinets next to the cows' milk. You will also find soya yogurts and soya cheeses. A more traditional soya product is tofu which has long been used in Chinese cooking.

Another meat substitute is mycoprotein which is made from a variety of fungus. Like soya protein it is sold in various forms that can be used in a range of recipes. You will also find it in ready made products often sold under the brand name "Quorn."

Beans, peas and lentils, known collectively as pulse, make up one of the major sources of protein for a vegetarian. They are incomplete proteins and must be combined with other incomplete proteins, such as grains, or complete proteins, such as eggs or milk, to make a complete protein food. Usually this is done in one dish such as beans and rice or beans on toast, but this is not always necessary as the body can store protein and combine it later.

Vegetarian Weight Loss - 9 Tips to Help Vegetarians Lose Weight

Going vegetarian doesn't guarantee weight loss and make you slim. As technology advances and more processed vegetarian foods "sprout up", the waistline of a vegetarian is growing as big as a meat-eater. It's getting hard to differentiate between these 2 groups of people who eat differently.

Here are the few reasons why you, a vegetarian is facing overweight issue, which is normally the problem of a meat-eater.

1. Cheap pre-packaged vegetarian foods infused with sodium, sugar and saturated fat that are too tempting to resist.

2. Because vegetarians are growing at warp rate, many non-veggie restaurants come up with veggie meals to share this big pie. Again, they use too many high-sodium, high-sugar, oily TVP (textured vegetable proteins) on their veggie dishes. Common sense says that such diet is not going to help any vegetarian lose weight.

3. The belief of "vegetarians are normally slim" or "vegetarian diet can help lose weight" have been crushed. Vegetarians started to show skepticism about whether they can really become slim.

4. Vegetarians are not spared in the agony of stressful workload and household matters. You still have to earn a living and take care of your spouse and kids and so on.

5. You don't obtain sufficient quality sleep and you always sleep late. Like many other people in general, you get hooked on facebook, twitter, other social networking activities and online games.

6. You go with soda, sugar-laced coffee, beer, alcohol and other high-calorie beverages but drink less water.

7. Because of your fiber-deficient food intake, you suffer from constipation. Storing waste in your body for more than 2 days can intoxicate your body and make your fat storage difficult to be retrieved for energy use.

8. You eat too fast. Before your stomach tells your brain its full, you've already finished the entire plate, resulting in over consumption of calories.

9. You lead a sedentary vegetarian lifestyle with little or no exercise.

These unhealthy ways of living are prime causes for your metabolic disorder. You must fix your metabolism back to its normal running state in order to lose weight as a vegetarian. How? Just reverse them all:

1. Avoid processed food with high sugar, sodium and fat.

2. Prepare your own vegetarian meals. You'll have a better chance of losing weight than when you eat out.

3. Vegetarian diet does lose weight, only if you eat healthily and nutritiously.

4. Learn how to cope with stress by going for massaging, exercising etc.

5. Sleep early and get enough quality sleep.

6. Stop all high-calorie, high-sugar beverages. Substitute them with water.

7. Eat more vegetables as these fibrous food will help you detox effectively. Less toxin in your body means more fat can be readily converted into energy to fuel your bodily needs.

8. Take time to savor your meal. Give your stomach enough time to communicate with your brain about your satiety level.

9. Get on with exercises at least 3 times a week. You'll feel more energetic every day.

Knowing these vegetarian weight loss tips is one thing, but applying them is another story. If you don't do them, you'll forever get stuck in this fat piece of skin. I used to be like you, if I can do it, why can't you?

Let's prove to the whole world that VEGETARIAN is the ultimate diet and lifestyle to lose weight. Ok? Good.

Eating Healthy School Meals for Vegetarians

Making sure that your child is having healthy meals at school can already be a challenge; it is even harder if your child is a vegetarian. However, most schools today have dedicated plenty of time and effort in researching and coming up with options to improving their meal programs and ensuring that they are complying with the contemporary dietary recommendations. For example, there are some schools that are now serving yogurt as an alternative for meat as well as non-dairy cheeses instead of the dairy ones, provided that they offer the same nutrients. There are still a number of schools, though, that are still not offering healthy vegan options for school meals, giving vegetarian children even less choices. If you are looking for some ideas and options on how your children can have healthy vegetarian meals in school, read on.

1. First off, you could opt to prepare a bag lunch for your child or children. Bag lunches would make sure that they would be eating tasty and nutritious food, instead of having to settle for whatever is being served at school. You could make mini-pizzas which are made from whole wheat pita bread, tomato sauce, vegetarian salami or pepperoni slices, cheese and some vegetable toppings like mushrooms and bell peppers. You could also make build-your-own lunch boxes. This would include some high-fiber rye or wheat crackers and some cheese or vegetarian pate or vegetarian luncheon meat that your child could put on the crackers. Some other great choices would be fresh fruits, grilled cheese sandwiches, vegetarian pasta dishes and even vegetarian antipasto.

2. Check if you could get a copy of the menu of the school cafeteria. This would give you and your child the opportunity to pick the best food choices every day.

3. You could also talk with the food service personnel of the school and discuss some possible practical and economical solutions.

4. There are also some programs which encourage schools to serve fresher and more nutritious meals. One example would be the National Farm to School Program, a program which started in the late 1990s in Florida and California. The program aims to provide schools with more fresh and locally grown produce. Some of its other goals would be to support local agriculture, educate students and parents about nutrition and improve meal options in school cafeterias.

5. You can also check with the school if they have plans of using the nutrient-based menu planning system. It is a system which calls for the evaluation of a meal based on its overall nutritional composition instead of on whether or not it has a certain number of servings from the different food groups. This system would make it easier for schools to come up with meatless menus, since food servings that are made from the mat group would not be required. Today, though, only a few schools in the US are making use of this system because changing from the old system to this new one would call for more resources that plenty of schools cannot afford.

Vegetarianism Guide to Types of Vegetarians

Usually, when you think of vegetarians, you think of people who avoid eating any type of animal flesh including beef, pork, lamb, poultry, fish, etc. There are several types and variations to vegetarianism. While many of the vegetarians are lacto ovo vegetarians who will everything but any kind of meat, some others will avoid eating eggs and dairy products and others will say no to beef, pork and poultry but will include fish and other seafood in their diet.

1) Lacto Ovo Vegetarians:

The most common type of vegetarians is the lacto ovo vegetarians. Lacto is the Latin word for milk and ovo means eggs in Latin. The lacto ovo vegetarian do not eat any kind of meat including beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish, etc. However, they will eat dairy products and eggs.

The lacto ovo vegetarian category is divided into two categories:

a) A Lacto Vegetarian does not eat meat and eggs but does eat dairy foods.

b) An Ovo Vegetarian does not eat meat and dairy products but does eat eggs.

2) Pescatarias:

The pescatarian or pescetarian are vegetarians who avoid eating meat but will continue eating fish and shellfish. The rationales behind the pescatarian diet are varied. Many choose this lifestyle for health concerns rather than ethical reasons. While others would claim that the fish industry is less cruel than the meat industry. Others will simply justify their decision by arguing that fish are less intelligent than farm animals.

Dedicated vegetarians would put the pescatarian under the category of semi vegetarians. In the same category you can find the pollo vegetarians who will include poultry in their diet, the flexitarianism who will avoid eating meat that derived from an animal that was brought up and died in cruel conditions. The flexitarianism are similar to the freeganism that would not mind eating any type of meat unless any part of its process involved environmental damage or human or animals exploitation.

3) Vegans:

They do not consume any product that was derived from animals including, of course, any kind of meat, fish, dairy products, eggs as well as honey and foods that contain gelatin. Some vegans would not touch cane sugar, beer and wine since animal products involve in the finishing process: cane sugar is filtered with bone char and some beer and wines are clarified with egg white. As part of the vegan ideology, vegans would not consume products made of leather, furs, pearls, etc.

4) Raw Vegans:

Also called raw foodists limit themselves to unprocessed food that has not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit or 46 degrees Celsius. Therefore, their diet mainly consists of raw vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. However, some of the raw foodists do consist raw food that was derived from animals in their diet including raw eggs, unheated dairy products and sushi.

5) Macrobiotics:

The macrobiotic diet is part of the macrobiotic methodology that was originated in Japan. The macrobiotics practitioners follow strict diet rules based on the principle of balance between yin and yang. The macrobiotic diet is based on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and soy products. They are allowed to include seaweed and certain types of fish in their diet.

Orange County California, a Veritable Vegetarian's Delight!

Craving a really good vegetarian-based meal? Having trouble getting anyone in your family or line-up of friends to join you in a meal? In Orange County California you can "have your cake and eat it too"! While I may not be a total vegan (a girl's gotta have a good BBQ'd rib sometimes), I do prefer eating a vegetarian meal most of the time. Problem is my family and friends think this type of cuisine is not something they wish to share with me! They think of soy based foods as something meant for me and me alone.

Fortunately, I have found mighty fine restaurants in our wonderful Southern California home that try very hard to cater to all concerned! So meat-eaters take a seat, even you will find something tasty in these fun places!

Mother's Market and Cafe-Mother's has a wonderful vegan menu, but since they also are a complete organic and health food market, the cafe serves up fish and chicken dishes as well. At least it was on the menu at the one I went to in Laguna Hills-which is one of the smaller units. Mother's has several locations throughout the county.

Rutabegorz-This restaurant has a warm place in my heart. Before it grew to the 3 locations it has today, it had just the one in Fullerton. Okay, this was in the '70's and I was but a young college student, but I was into healthy eating even then! Why I love Rutabegorz is the atmosphere is relaxed, the baked goods are made on the premises (low fat, low/non sugar and tasty too!), the menu eclectic and my husband doesn't mind the tuna and salad dishes. When I went there "way back when", my college dance buddies and I could feel good eating the whole wheat bagel with avocado, tomatoes and soy cheese. Wish they still had it on the menu! Besides Fullerton, they also have one in Orange and Tustin

Zinc's Cafe and Market-Laguna Beach. Great breakfasts. Terrific baked goods. Salads are wonderful. Some very interesting lunch choices. Menu is always changing, but the coffee is gourmet and smells wonderful.

Native Foods-the new kid in town, sort of speak. Located in Costa Mesa, this is turning into quite a wonderful destination spot for vegans. Semi-casual, upscale menu-they have some faux meat dishes that from what a couple of diners said-had someone ordered their meals for them without telling them what kind of restaurant this is, they would have never guessed that they weren't eating "the real thing".

Veggie and Tea House-This is just what it says, mainly a tea house that happens to serve vegetarian dishes. While this place is charming and the food quite nice, in all honesty, this is probably the least likely of all the recommended places that might pass muster with the meat eating crowd.

Other suggestions? Most Asian restaurants are quite vegan/vegetarian friendly! Jade Palace in Aliso Viejo will substitute tofu for any meat in any of their dishes.

So fellow vegetable lovers take heart, we can go out for a meal with our carnivore mates and we all can enjoy!

Vegetarians and vegans - to understand the differences

Whether you prepare meals for someone else or consider changing your diet, you need to know the difference between vegetarians and vegans. In other words, someone is vegetarian does not eat meat or fish and is a vegan who eats no animal products at all.

Of course, there are people who eat meat or fish occasionally. They may be saturated in the process of switching to a vegetarian diet or reduce their consumption of all dataFat. They can be considered as semi-vegetarians into consideration.

Some vegetarians eat milk and milk products, but do not eat eggs. They are often called lacto-vegetarians. Want vegan except they incorporate milk into their diet.

Do vegetarians eat eggs, other dairy products as well. You are ovo-vegetarians. I'm vegan, but eat eggs.

In some places, many vegetarians can not for any of these steps, if steps towards a fully mobile veganDiet. A vegan avoids all animal products, including garments. Some vegans also do not eat honey and yeast.

All these plans as a viable life choices have been met. The eating habits of your dinner will be a challenge, not a chore.

And 'possible for a nutritious diet for an adult course no guarantee of such plans. For a complete vegan protein should come from vegetables and grains together in interesting combinations. Vegetarians eat theseDishes. If you have a variety of dishes for dinner, you can make their own decisions.

If you want to switch to a vegan diet is best to start with full secure a gradual change. The initial work towards a vegetarian diet, then slowly to a vegan diet. Do not try too much on vegetarian or vegan classes suspended. Feel and enjoy, and to know the potential range of vegan vegetarian.
