Vegan Travel - My 7 Favorite European Cities For Traveling As A Vegan Or Vegetarian

If you're worried about vegan travel in Europe, you'll be surprised at how easy it can be if you are prepared and go to the right spots. Traveling as a vegetarian is incredibly easy, and vegan options are becoming a lot more common. Some countries are easier than others, and the trick for how to travel and be vegan is often to look at the climate.
Countries with cold climates, like Switzerland and Northern Italy, tend to use cheese in vegetarian dishes so they are a bit more difficult for vegans. However, in warmer areas, like around the Mediterranean, there are plenty of vegan-friendly options in restaurants.
Vegan travel is made easier now that many European cities have restaurants offering Indian or Asian cuisine, which almost always have vegetarian and vegan dishes.
In large cities, or in University towns, there is a growing vegetarian community so you can find vegan and vegetarian restaurants as well as health food and organic stores offering vegan products. If all else fails, or if you want to save some money, head to a grocery store and make yourself a meal out of the local fruits, vegetables, grains and beans. The simplest method of vegan travel is to do like you would at home and cook for yourself.
Of the large cities in Europe, these are the top 7 for finding vegan meals in restaurants:
7: Prague (Czech Republic) has lots of buffets and take-out options for vegan travel, along with lots of health food stores, and a few vegan restaurants. Be careful of dairy in vegetarian dishes, since the vegan scene isn't huge in the Czech Republic yet.
6: Stockholm (Sweden) doesn't have a lot of fully vegan restaurants, but there are plenty of restaurants that offer a good selection of vegan food. These are mostly international restaurants, not Swedish cuisine, which is fairly reliant on meat. Some restaurants use organic ingredients, and there are lots of health food stores around town where you can find food for vegan travel.
5: Amsterdam (Netherlands) has many vegan travel options (restaurant, buffet, fast food), along with a few yoga studios offering raw vegan food. There are also a few juice bars around town with wheatgrass and superfoods to keep you healthy, and there are a decent selection of health food and organic stores.
4: Athens (Greece) boasts a vegan bakery, a raw vegan restaurant (with delivery), many restaurants offering vegan selections, and lots of organic & health food stores. Greece in general is pretty friendly for vegan travel since the climate is very mild. The only catch on how to travel and be vegan in Greece is that they love cheese - feta as well as local specialties.
3: Berlin (Germany) is quite friendly for vegan travel, being a large city with a growing proportion of young people. There are lots of fully vegan fast food options, some fully vegan restaurants, and plenty of vegan-friendly vegetarian and other restaurants. You can also find a lot of health food stores. Surprisingly, even most regular German restaurants have at least one vegan option.
2: Barcelona (Spain) has a lot of vegan and vegetarian restaurants, most of those having vegan options. You can find fast food, buffet and gourmet options, and lots of health food stores. Spanish cuisine in Barcelona is mostly vegetarian, with fish being the major thing to avoid for vegan travel.
1: London (UK) has so many options to choose from in & around London that vegan travel is a breeze. You'll find lots of Asian and Indian restaurants, restaurants following macrobiotic principles, and even some raw vegan restaurants. The plentiful vegetarian restaurants almost always offer some vegan dishes, and many pubs also serve veggie burgers. There are lots of health food and organic stores, and even a place that makes vegan gelato.
