Benefits of Eating Spinach everyday

Not many of us like the idea of eating spinach daily. But the fact is that this green leafy vegetable is a powerhouse of nutrients with very few calories. Some citizen do not like the taste of it but I have a cure for you. I mix 3 handfuls in with my fruit smoothie every morning and you can't even taste it. I bet your kids wouldn't even know they were eating it.

Eating Spinach daily has many condition advantages and is a strong building block to a salutary body. Eating Vegan on Cruises

Vegans may be uncertain about whether or not a cruise is a good idea for them! Will they find something suitable to eat aboard the ship? As it turns out, several cruise lines have a vegan menu. Others have a vegetarian menu with a few vegan selections. Some cruise lines will create individual vegan meals for travelers, if they call the cruise company in advance or speak to the cruise director on board upon arrival. Some cruise companies will arrange for your vegan meal and enter it into their computer system when you book the trip by phone. They may arrange for you to meet with the ship's chef during your journey, so that he can create a vegan meal especially for you, according to your diet concerns. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Celebrity cruises do offer vegan menus.

Then there is the matter of the ship's buffet stations. They usually do have some vegan vegetable, fruit, and salad options. Vegans may speak to the chef behind the buffet stations to ask if he will prepare a vegan version of an item in the buffet, such as a vegetable dish made with olive oil instead of sauteed in butter. Some chefs will indeed cater to your request.

Certain cruise lines will prepare a special, boxed lunch for particular diet needs (such as vegan) for shore excursions. This may be required in the Caribbean where there aren't many vegan restaurants.

Several cruise lines have their own Caribbean island where they host a beach BBQ party for their guests. They typically prepare some vegetable items for these activities.

In summary, there are quite a few cruise lines that will prepare vegan meals. The important thing is to call in advance and ask the specific company what their policy is for vegan diners!

My Wife Stopped Eating Dead Bodies

Some months ago my wife stopped eating dead bodies, She became a full time vegetarian and still is. This has had an affect on me. I'm like a vampire that has rationed its blood intake. I have reduced my meat consumption and now regard food in a different light than previously. Meat does not have to be the main course anymore. In fact, my food horizon has widened greatly. It didn't happen overnight. Frequently over the years my wife and I (married 35 years) discussed the rights and wrongs of eating other animals - basically eating dead flesh. As pet lovers we both agreed it was wrong for many reasons and could find nothing to really justify it. It was when we started getting more pets and even closer to understanding animal life that the message became clearer.  When you form strong friendships with other creatures you begin to realize they are the same as us in many ways.  It's especially apparent when you live close with them and they become part of the family, part of your life. You can reach a point where there is a spiritual link  between you. Killing is bad enough but to then eat the dead body? No, something's not quite right about that. I'm against the killing of all animals unless it's absolutely necessary and I think it won't be long now before I stop eating meat entirely. My lust for blood is gradually fading. Anyway, the meat nowadays is not so good. Not like the old days when it was natural and free range. Nowadays its caged, chemicalized, forced fed and doped-up with things to make it grow faster. We're probably better not eating it anyway. I've already started eating more vegetables and fruit. It's so easy to knock-up a veggie stir fry and some boiled rice or a pasta dish with a nice sauce. However I've found the dining out scene does not cater well for vegetarians. I think there's a lot more that could be done to create good and tasty meals for vegetarians. Chefs need to think outside the meat square. It would be good if they trained chefs to have a less meaty outlook. What do you think? Is eating dead bodies really right?

Vegetarian Recipes - A Way To Eating Healthy

More and more people are choosing to eat a vegetarian diet because they know that veggies are healthful food. Using low calorie and vegetarian recipes is one of the most important things you can do to protect your heath and the health of your family since obesity is now an epidemic in the United States and other developed countries. Cooking them is still better than the alternatives to a vegetarian lifestyle or a vegan lifestyle, but we receive the most nutritional benefit from ingesting whole and organic raw foods. They will often include many of the vitamins, minerals, and sources of nutrition that every body needs. These low calorie recipes, usually high in fiber, protect against digestive disorders such as diverticulosis and may offer protection from colon and lung cancers. Many low calorie and vegetarian recipes use soy, tofu, dried beans and peas to add protein to meals. Using low calorie recipes will provide a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes, adding high amounts of all the essential vitamins and minerals. Subscribing to vegetarian magazines, scouring newspaper food sections, and visiting veggie websites will bring you a respectable number of recipes, but it's more convenient to have hundreds and hundreds in one place.
Including a few vegetarian recipes into your diet can quickly improve how you feel and can be part of an overall health plan that will improve your life. And contrary to popular belief, these recipes are full of the taste and enjoyment of many other foods you eat. Incorporating vegetarian recipes into any diet will bring variety and give healthy eating options. Plus, vegetarian cuisine is chockfull of dishes that are robust and flavorful, and a match for any standard meat dish. Such treats as squash with tofu, vegetarian paella, and baked figs with dried fruit and anisette may well convert some confirmed carnivores to part-time vegetarians. Many of these recipes cook faster than those made with meat. As more people juggle trying to eat healthier with their busy lifestyles, they may find that Vegetarian slow cooking provides an answer. What I like best about slow cooker Vegetarian recipes is that the long, slow-cooking process enriches the flavor of the dish in a way that other cooking methods can't match. The gentle slow-cooking process actually draws more flavor out of the ingredients. In addition to convenience, slow cooking also scores high marks for taste and nutrition since the long cooking time allows both flavors and nutrients to concentrate in the food. While the slow cooker was once synonymous with cooking pot roasts and other meat dishes, just as my friend discovered, the Vegetarian cook will find a vast number of ways to use it.
Exploring vegetarian recipes is great simply to spice up the kitchen with something new. Whether you are choosing to eat vegetarian dishes as a permanent diet or as part of a healthier lifestyle, Vegetarian Recipes is packed with ideas to tempt the most committed carnivore.

Turkey Holidays - Eating Out in Istanbul

It is possible to find a restaurant to suit all budgets and all dining habits in practically every corner of Istanbul. In addition to places where one can find noteworthy samples of Turkish and world cuisine ranging from Japanese to Californian, it is also possible to encounter cosy cafes and buffets. Most of the cafes offer a quick bite, whereas bars are usually places for dancing and music, though some of them do offer a food menu.

The most elegant and expensive restaurants in Istanbul are in the entertainment centre of Taksim, as well as the shopping districts of Nisantasi, Tesvikiye, Etiler and Levent. The choicest samples of Turkish and world cuisine are served in the restaurants of big hotels. There are various restaurants for tourists and those on a budget in districts such as Beyoglu, and Sultanahmet.

RESTAURANTS

The most common type of restaurants in Istanbul is the traditional self-service lokanta. The menus are usually of vgetable and meat-based dishes, but some of them have grilled food and kebab. Kebab sis are places where every kind of meat is grilled or cooked in various ways, Lahmacun and 'pide' are among the original turkish soulfood found in those places.

There are restaurants in Istanbul which serve only vegetarian fare. However, many normal restaurants also have vegetable dishes and omelettes for vegetarians. Most restaurants have non smoking sections. However, there are few restaurants with high-chairs for infants. Most restaurants are not wheelchair friendly, but fortunately it does not present a problem as the restaurants are usually on the ground floor. Some traditional restaurants and kebab shops do not serve alcohol and there is no strict jacket and tie dress code to worry about either.

Fish restaurants and bars have a large place in the dining culture of istanbul. They usually have a warm and sincere atmosphere. Fish restaurants are found mostly along the Bosphorus and Kumkapi, on Marmara Sea shore. The variety of fish, which is seasonal, is exhibited so that customers can choose what fish they wish to see in their dish. Fish is usually served grilled or fried. Plates of 'meze' (appetizers), salads and/or raki, the Turkish national drink, can be chosen with the fish.

Prices are based on the kilo, which is determined on a day-to-day basis. Meyhanes may seem to offer the same menus as the fish restaurants, but the meze here are more varied and fresher, whereas grilled meat dishes are also available. Waiters display 'meze' on trays, and customers choose the ones they desire. You don't need to book seats at most of these restaurants situated crowded and popular places. If one is full, you will definitely find a place in another.

Restaurants and Eating Out in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Buenos Aires is the kind of city that has "something for everyone." Bars and restaurants are plentiful throughout the city. The locals take their time with dinner and include some wonderful wines with their meal.

Dinnertime generally doesn't begin until 8.30 pm. Popular cuisine includes everything from Argentine barbecues, known as "asado," to Japanese sushi. Argentineans have a strong love for meat, so vegetarians may have to make do with fish and salads and a smaller selection of vegetarian dishes.

Vegetarian Dishes

Step into the Palermo, Recoleta, Puerto Madero, and Las Cañitas neighborhoods for the widest array of cuisine to suit your palate. For starters, or a quick meal, empanadas are often a popular choice. These are pieces of baked or fried pastry stuffed with chicken, beef, ham, cheese, boiled eggs, olives, or vegetables. Or you can order a mixture of all of the above. Pizza is a popular favorite with numerous pizzerias found throughout the city. Franchises like Subway are also available for those who prefer familiar fast food. Pasta is also quite commonly chosen as a daily meal. Regular culinary fare is often simple, centering around meat, potatoes, and bread.

Steakhouses can be found throughout Buenos Aires due to the popularity of asado, where chicken and beef (as well as their offals) are barbecued over charcoal. Meat is often served rare unless a preference is specifically requested.

For a more refined European style meal, the filet mignon at Bife de Loma comes highly recommended for its tenderness and flavor. Argentina is famous for its wine, so be sure to sample some of these (like the Malbec) while you're here. At Bife de Loma, a four course meal for two inclusive of wine and a tip could amount to less than 0.

El Gato Dumas is also a popular restaurant for its Parisian appeal. The owner, Dumas, is well known in Argentina, having made numerous television appearances as well as creating in-flight menus for Argentina's national airline.

Sweetmeats are also very popular in Argentina. Ice creams are one of the most loved of all of these, where all natural ingredients are used. Freddo, Volta and Persicco are recommended, although many others would easily hit the spot as well. Dulce de Leche-a milky caramel flavored ice cream-tastes excellent when added to a warm flan or when used in Havannets.

While Buenos Aires does come with the standard fast food and pasta establishments as well as a wide range of exotic Oriental and European cuisine, one needs to be adventurous and try the local cuisines of asado and local fast food like empanadas to truly get in touch with the "flavor" of the city.

Vegetarian Eating - Six Small Steps to Get You Started

If you want to change to a healthy vegan or vegetarian diet, the best way is to do it gradually. It is easier to handle gradual change; we all have built in "anti-change" mechanisms, whether it is around changes to our job, habits, or where we live, most of us resist change, so you might need to let it sneak in over a period of time. Also, small changes are easier to fit into your lifestyle and you are more likely to carry the change through that way.

1. Do a Review of your Current Dishes

Vegetarian Dishes

Start by doing a review of your current eating habits; most people have a repertoire of around eight meals that they cook on a regular basis. It has become a habit, we shop and buy the same ingredients each week and juggle those ingredients into our habitual meals. We get the cookbook out very occasionally to cook a special meal, maybe when friends are coming to lunch or dinner, but the rest of the time we circle through those eight old favourites.

There are some conflicting views on the amount of time it takes to change a habit, but most agree that it takes 21 days to either break an old habit or introduce a new habit. Therefore, if you can change the way you think about your meals for 21 days, you can instill a new way of eating into your life.

Make a list of the dishes you regularly cook and take a long hard look - think about how long they have been in your list, and whether they really are still favourites, then list them in order of preference. Maybe one has ingredients that have become more expensive, maybe another takes longer to prepare, or is not liked by everyone.

If you can't decide between a couple of meals, think about what animal products they contain and which you would like to stop eating the most. Too much red meat is one of the things that is not good for you, so perhaps start by excluding a beef dish. You may have other reasons for prioritizing what you would like to give up.

2. Replace One Dish at a Time

Now, take the meal that scored the lowest in your preferences and cross it out. A vegetarian option will replace this meal. Don't make a big fuss about this to the rest of the family; just decide to change it over. If you feel some opposition from family members to eating a vegetarian meal, do not mention that is what it is. Let them try the meal without preconceived prejudice! My sons often eat my vegetarian dishes AND raid the leftovers, but they shy away from telling their friends they enjoy this food!

3. Take Another Step...

Once you have successfully substituted one meal over a few weeks, move on to your next least favourite meal and do the same thing. As you are doing this you will find some vegetarian meals that you are not so fond of, just as you have found in the past with meat dishes. When this happens, just try a different dish until you find something you like. This probably won't happen for the first few dishes you try, as you will naturally tend towards those dishes that contain your favourite vegetables, but as you get more adventurous you most likely will.

Continue with this cycle until you have a new menu of vegetarian dishes in place of the old meat meals. It will take several months, giving you time to adjust to the changes.

4. Handle the Opposition...

Younger children will easily adapt and won't even realize what has changed unless told. With older children, particularly teenage boys, or your partner, you might encounter some resistance. With my sons (who were in their teens and twenties), I let them buy and cook meat for themselves to accompany my dishes. This means they have a choice - they can make an effort, get themselves to the shop, buy meat and cook it, or they can eat what you have cooked. I think you can guess what happens most often, but they no longer argue because they have a choice.

They are happy to be able to show off their cooking skills to each other or to their girlfriends. I am happy that I am not contributing to their meat eating, but don't want to force my ideals onto them, particularly as I brought them up eating meat. This way is a compromise that we can all live with.

5. Continue to Make Gradual Changes

It is much easier to go vegetarian gradually. You might start out by giving up different types of meat, then give up eggs, then fish, then dairy. You might decide to leave some of these options in your diet. A true vegan doesn't eat or use any animal product, i.e. no meat, fish, eggs or dairy and also doesn't wear leather or other animal products, or use anything that contains any of these. A lacto-ovo vegetarian eats dairy products and eggs, but no meat. A lacto vegetarian eats dairy products, but not eggs or meat. A pesco vegetarian (or pescatarian) includes fish in their diet.

6.Changes as you Change

One of the first changes that you should begin to notice is that you will feel better. Your skin will be clearer and you will feel lighter, not dragged down by sludge in your colon. You should also begin to lose weight. There is no cholesterol or saturated fat in a vegan diet, each reduction of meat eating in your diet will reduce your intake of those substances.

You will also notice changes in your bowel movements, eating fruits and vegetables gives your body a natural detox, but so long as you take the gradual approach there shouldn't be anything too drastic here. The fibre in fruits and vegetables help to clear waste out of the body. Once you have changed to a vegan diet your food will move through your body much quicker than when you eat meat. Our intestines are not designed for a meat eater and when you eat meat it takes around 2 to 4 days for the meat to work its way through the intestines.

Challenges in Becoming Vegan...

We all find different challenges in making any change. As well as the dishes you cook for your regular dinner menu, you will need to think about what you eat for snacks, what you eat when you have tea or coffee with a friend, what you cook for a special meal and what you do when you go to a friend's place for dinner.

A Final Thought -

So, it isn't difficult. Set yourself realistic goals that you can achieve rather than going all-out in one step. Create the intention in your mind and then take small steps to work towards your goal.

Good luck and happy vegging!

Vegetarian Eating Out

Mexican restaurants offer hearty bean burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, and tacos-- all of which provide good protein. Cheese and vegetable quesadillas are delicious. Veggie fajitas (steamed and seasoned vegetables strips served with a thin tortilla and toppings of guacamole, salsa, sour cream, and cheese) are a good choice. Most beans (pinto, black, and refried) are now made with vegetable oil, but some restaurants may use lard, so confirm with the restaurant that no lard or meat seasonings, such as chicken stock or bacon, have been used. Nachos can be prepared with beans instead of meat. Spanish restaurants, found only in certain locales, are quite distinct from Mexican eateries and frequently have several vegetarian items.

Fast food burger places will often make a cheese sandwich if asked (a bun, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles). French fries are a standby, and onion rings, pitas sandwiches, salads, and some bread products are very often made with all lacto-vegetarian ingredients. Many better restaurant chains carry a vegetable or gluten-based burger on the menu. Most fast food restaurants have printed consumer-material that gives details on all the items on their menu.

Vegetarian Dishes

Pizza has many non-meat combinations of toppings. Many Italian restaurants offer a range of items such as fried mozzarella sticks (although please check the ingredients of the batter unfortunately sometimes they use eggs), spaghetti with meat-free marinara or alfredo sauce, and grilled portabello mushrooms. Check to assure that the pasta is eggless.

Sandwich and subs shops often have subs, veggie pitas and "wraps" filled with a variety of veggies, black olives, and cheese, and served either hot or cold.

Greek or Middle-East restaurants generally serve falafel ground, spiced, fried chickpea (garbanzo bean) patties that are served hot, stuffed into a pita, and topped with a smooth tahini sauce. Hummus and baba ganouj are also vegetarian alternatives. Add a Greek salad with chunks of feta cheese and ripe olives.

Natural food restaurants cater to vegetarians and will have a great assortment of dishes.

Chinese restaurants offer a wide variety of vegetable stir-fry dishes, and bean curd (tofu) specialties that can be made without meat or animal products. One delicious dish is fried tofu with broccoli in a scrumptious garlic sauce. It's out of this world! Other tasty Chinese dishes include vegetable lo mein and chow mein. In terms of appetizers, we can recommend vegetarian spring rolls (please check that the wrap is eggless) and scallion pancakes.

Buffets and salad bars are available at many mainstream restaurants. Many also have special dietary options which may include low-fat, heart-healthy, or vegetarian items.

Indian restaurants offer soups, side dishes, and many main courses that are strictly vegetarian. Some Indian restaurants are entirely vegetarian.

Vegetarian Options When Eating Out And About

Vegetarians are now becoming increasingly popular due to the amount of new foods available to choose from and the acceptance that it is a choice and sometimes a belief of many people in today's society.

At home and in major supermarkets, contributors have excepted the need to supply vegetarian options such as quorn, new microwave meal, veggies pies etc but what about when out and about in concerts, pubs and dinning places.

Vegetarian Dishes

Do people consider the correct way to handle and prepare vegetarian food and do they offer a wide range of choices and options.

Cafes:

Cafes that offer breakfast and many other assortments of food such as sandwiches, cakes, parties and many more now do seem to consider vegetarian options. A popular choice on the list for vegetarians' is the veggie breakfast that contains either just no meat, or a choice of a meat alternative such as, quorn sausages or quorn bacon.

At lunch time however the choices are a bit smaller as the need for vegetarian foods seems to be overrun with bacon butties and sausage sandwiches.

A popular choice is a veggies burger in a bap or jacket potatoes with a suitable filling. A veggie panni is also a choice that is offered too.

Mobile Burger vans:

At concerts when out and about, this is the most limiting as the place in which to cook vegetarian food has already been contaminated with the meat. The grills cannot cook veggie products on it as the meat has its oil left on the grill; this also includes any onions and mushrooms too.

Usually pre-packed food such as a cake or crisps can be purchased.

Pubs and restaurants:

A lot of places now do have a vegetarian selection on the menu to choose from, other places have larger options such check online before going alone and being disappointed.

A popular selection is always vegetarian lasagne, alone with jacket potatoes and some sort of fresh salad.

Eating Healthy School Meals for Vegetarians

Making sure that your child is having healthy meals at school can already be a challenge; it is even harder if your child is a vegetarian. However, most schools today have dedicated plenty of time and effort in researching and coming up with options to improving their meal programs and ensuring that they are complying with the contemporary dietary recommendations. For example, there are some schools that are now serving yogurt as an alternative for meat as well as non-dairy cheeses instead of the dairy ones, provided that they offer the same nutrients. There are still a number of schools, though, that are still not offering healthy vegan options for school meals, giving vegetarian children even less choices. If you are looking for some ideas and options on how your children can have healthy vegetarian meals in school, read on.

1. First off, you could opt to prepare a bag lunch for your child or children. Bag lunches would make sure that they would be eating tasty and nutritious food, instead of having to settle for whatever is being served at school. You could make mini-pizzas which are made from whole wheat pita bread, tomato sauce, vegetarian salami or pepperoni slices, cheese and some vegetable toppings like mushrooms and bell peppers. You could also make build-your-own lunch boxes. This would include some high-fiber rye or wheat crackers and some cheese or vegetarian pate or vegetarian luncheon meat that your child could put on the crackers. Some other great choices would be fresh fruits, grilled cheese sandwiches, vegetarian pasta dishes and even vegetarian antipasto.

2. Check if you could get a copy of the menu of the school cafeteria. This would give you and your child the opportunity to pick the best food choices every day.

3. You could also talk with the food service personnel of the school and discuss some possible practical and economical solutions.

4. There are also some programs which encourage schools to serve fresher and more nutritious meals. One example would be the National Farm to School Program, a program which started in the late 1990s in Florida and California. The program aims to provide schools with more fresh and locally grown produce. Some of its other goals would be to support local agriculture, educate students and parents about nutrition and improve meal options in school cafeterias.

5. You can also check with the school if they have plans of using the nutrient-based menu planning system. It is a system which calls for the evaluation of a meal based on its overall nutritional composition instead of on whether or not it has a certain number of servings from the different food groups. This system would make it easier for schools to come up with meatless menus, since food servings that are made from the mat group would not be required. Today, though, only a few schools in the US are making use of this system because changing from the old system to this new one would call for more resources that plenty of schools cannot afford.

How to Save Your Money When Eating Outside

The general public usually gets into the habit of saving by spending less. They begin to cut costs here and there. Being frugal is one thing, but being a miser with quality of life is another. The one section where most people do this is the eating category. Imagine forcing yourself not to eat the usual food everyday, all in the purpose of saving money. You do not want to take this too far because it can cause potential health problems. While this is a great idea to reduce spending, there are ways to go about this strategy. Why not keep your money and keep your health at the same time?

Realize that eating outside is expensive

No matter how cheap, it is always more expensive than eating at home. At this point, having a wife is an advantage. Cooking home-cooked meals are more affordable because of cheaper prices of raw ingredients.

Of course, you could argue the eating out is more convenient. But think about this. The time it takes to cook a meal at home (cheaper) is almost the same as the time to go out to eat (more expensive). Since both require the same amount of time (give and take), it is wiser to eat at home. Besides, you are training yourself to become a better cook!

If you have to eat outside

Consider vegetarian dishes. Why is this? Usually, vegetables will cost much less than meat-based foods. With recent studies that applaud green foods (that contain less free radicals, compared to meat), this is another good news.

Do not order beverage or drinks

Restaurants will make the most profit this way and you still do not know it. Not until you get drunk! Carefully reject alcohol drinks and opt for water. Alcohol not only contains more calories but makes you tired right after.

Eat in a balanced way

No one suggests that you should eat like a prisoner in a jail. Get creative with your food selection. You could order grilled chicken or beef at 'McDonalds' instead of fried ones. You could inform the chefs exactly how you want your meals to be cooked. Even desserts and appetizers are fine, too. Just, do not go extreme when it comes to eating. Maintaining a balance is the key.

Learn how to cook

When you know the skills of cooking, you might not want to eat outside ever again. Why leave the house to spend more money and eat something you might not like? Instead, control your food type sand even calories for a much more healthy living.
