Known for the Golden Temple and the Jalian Wala Bagh Massacre, Amritsar is the pride of Punjab and the Sikhs. It is a pilgrimage for the Sikh Community. It is located in North West side of India on the Pakistan border.
The Rajasansi airport connects Amritsar by both domestic and international flights. It is connected to most of the North Indian towns by road. There are direct trains to Amritsar from many states of India. The best time to visit Amritsar is between February and June as it is the time between the cold winter and the very hot summer of Amritsar. The minimum temperature on any summer day in Amritsar is 27 degree Celsius.
Amritsar, if chosen for vacations, is a good choice as it has all the elements of a memorable holiday. Golden Temple is the most esteemed shrine of the Sikhs. The pool around it gave the city the name of Amritsar which means the pool of nectar. It was established by Guru Hargobind Singh. It is called so as the building is covered with gold plates. Every Sikh of the world visits the golden temple at least once in his life time. The Lunger or the canteen offers free food to thousands of people daily irrespective of their caste and race.
The Jalian wala bagh memorial is located at about half a kilometer from the Golden Temple. It is of high importance in the freedom struggle of India. In 1919, on the day of Baisakhi, the New Year for Punjabis, thousands of Sikhs gathered to celebrate the festival in a peaceful manner. The then lieutenant general G Dyer opened fire on the group killing and wounding thousands of them without any warning. The heinous act increased the freedom struggle manifolds.
Ram Bagh is the landscaped garden with Summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh who was called the Lion of Punjab It has a museum with relics of Mughal era and hand drawn sketches and portraits of the ruling Sikhs. One can be lost in the glorious history of India in this museum. It also is a marvel of architecture with a maintenance free inbuilt cooling system. It also exhibits a replica of The Kohinoor.
The food here is mostly Punjabi. The Punjabi cuisine has a large variety of mouth watering dishes to both vegetarians and non vegetarians. Makki ki roti with sarson ka saag and tandoori chicken are the best dishes of Amritsar.
