Jamaican Recipes

Whether you are from a West Indian background, or if you are simply looking for a variety of tasty new dishes that you can prepare at home, perhaps it is time to consider learning to cook some Jamaican recipes. Jamaican food can be wonderfully tasty, and if you love spicy food, it may be ideal for you. Additionally, you will discover that Jamaican food includes a number of ingredients that you may have previously eaten, and thus can make us a nice change when you are you feeling like eating something different.

For non-Jamaicans, perhaps the famous dish from the island, is "jerk". This is based around a style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meat (traditionally goat or pork, but chicken and other meats are often used nowadays as well) is rubbed with a marinade containing a combination of spices known as "jerk spice" and then cooked. Historically, jerk dishes were prepared by smoking them over a small fire, but today they are generally cooked on a barbecue-type grill, or failing that can even be baked in a normal kitchen oven.

Vegetarian Dishes

Other popular Jamaican dishes include curried goat (goat meal cooked with spices), fried dumplings, fried plantains (plantains are a type of banana), and of course rice and peas (which is seasoned rice with coconut milk, flavorings, and beans or peas). Additionally the national dish of the country is ackee (also sometimes spelled "akee") and saltfish (cod). Rehydrated salted cod is sautéed with boiled ackee (ackee is a type of fruit) and a variety of other vegetables and spices.

In this article, I have only touched the surface. There are many other popular Jamaican dishes which I expect you will enjoy trying - including meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, as well as soups and Rastafarian dishes.
